Starting in mid August 2011 my wife Camilla and I did a six week tour by bike through Germany and the Czech Republic along the river Elbe which becomes the Labe in the Czech Republic. We were not pressed for time and took the opportunity to properly appreciate the surroundings. We took a tent, inflatable mattresses and sleeping bags intending to camp most nights but ended up staying more nights in guesthouses rather than in our tent.
We started our tour by air from Western Australia. For the third year running we travelled to Europe by Emirates with our own bikes. Emirates tourist class flights now allow a total baggage allowance per person of 30kg. This is enough for the bike and as much gear as you really want to put on a bike. If you want extra warm clothing just wear it onto the plane.The bike does have to be packed thoroughly to meet the requirements of the airline.
